Facts About Cobras. Cobras, with their threatening hoods and intimidating upright postures, are some of the most iconic snakes on Earth. Their elegance, prideful stance and venomous bite have made them both respected and feared. The word comes from the Portuguese cobra de capello, which means . Genetically, “true” cobras are members of the genus Naja, but according to Viernum, often “the name cobra references several species of snakes, most of which are in the venomous snake family Elapidae. Elpididae includes other snakes like coral snakes, kraits and mambas.” Many of these snakes either possess hoods or the ability to raise the upper part of their body. These snakes cannot hold their fangs down on prey so they inject venom through their fangs, according to the San Diego Zoo. They have an excellent sense of smell and night vision. In addition to their trademark hoods, cobras have round pupils and smooth scales. There are red, yellow, black, mottled, banded and many other colors and patterns of cobra. According to Cape Snake Conservation, the forest cobra is the largest true cobra, reaching 1.

According to the San Diego Zoo, most cobras hunt at dawn or dusk, though some species forage during the heat of the day. Fortunately, antivenin is available and sometimes lives can also be saved with the use of an artificial respirator. Viernum explained cobras’ neurotoxic venom’s effects: “Like coral snakes, cobras have potent neurotoxic venom, which acts on the nervous system. Symptoms from a neurotoxic cobra bite can include problems with vision, difficulty swallowing and speaking, skeletal muscle weakness, difficulty breathing, respiratory failure, vomiting, abdominal pain, necrosis, and anticoagulation.” . According to the American Museum of Natural History, spitting cobras also have the ability to shoot venom from their fangs directly into the eyes of the victim with terrifying accuracy. By following this eating plan, you can control your blood glucose levels and lessen the likelihood of developing other diabetes- related problems. Phosphorus isn’t cleared well through dialysis. It can build to high levels in the bloodstream and cause complications such as weak bones, heart problems, joint pain or skin ulcers. Too much or too little potassium can cause muscle weakness and heart failure. By controlling foods that contain these minerals, you lessen the risk of developing additional complications. Sodium causes your body to hold on to more fluid and raises your blood pressure. It also makes you thirsty, causing you to drink too much fluid. When you have too much fluid in your body, you may feel uncomfortable and short of breath. When this excess fluid is removed during dialysis, you can feel dizzy and weak afterwards. Eating less sodium and controlling your fluid intake can help you feel comfortable before and after your dialysis sessions. Uncontrolled blood glucose level can also increase your thirst. Check your glucose and keep it controlled to help manage your thirst. What about fluid intake? Your dietitian will recommend a specific fluid allowance, based on your health, remaining kidney function, level of activity and the type of dialysis you choose. How long do I have to follow the diabetic dialysis diet? This is dependent on what your doctor and dietitian recommend. How do I know if the diabetic dialysis diet is working? You’ll know if the diabetic dialysis diet is working by how you feel and through lab test results. Diabetics are instructed to monitor their own blood glucose levels through a simple test using a home blood glucose monitoring machine. If you don’t have one, ask your doctor for a prescription for a glucose monitoring machine and testing strips. You’ll be able to see if your blood glucose levels fall within an acceptable range at anytime. Another test, called a hemoglobin A1c or A1c test, is performed by your doctor. This test measures the average blood glucose level over three months. The results can tell you how well your diabetes has been controlled. Your diet may require changes when your A1c level is too high. In addition to controlling your diabetes, your diabetic dialysis diet is designed to help you with your kidney disease. By sticking to your fluid allowance, eating the recommended foods and watching your phosphorus, sodium and potassium intake, plus taking your prescribed medications, you will eat well and should feel better and stay healthier. Your dietitian will monitor your health and conduct a nutrition assessment when you start on dialysis and then each year after that. This assessment will check for any signs of nutrition problems, changes in weight and energy levels plus any problems that may interfere with eating. If I follow the diabetic dialysis diet will my kidneys get better? No diet or treatment can reverse the damage done to the kidneys. The diabetic dialysis diet will keep you healthy by managing your blood glucose levels and lessening the chances of other complications resulting from diabetes and kidney disease. Reasons Why You're Not Losing Weight. Sometimes, people can diet and work out and track their calories and do everything right—but still not lose weight. I can't begin to tell you how often members, friends and even acquaintances ask me why they're not losing weight despite doing X, Y or Z. It's one of the most common questions I get as a trainer. Sometimes, the answer isn't that easy to come by. But usually, when someone seems to be doing the right things but not making progress, a list of possible problems runs through my head. These are the most common scenarios I tend to see that stop people from getting results—and they could be the culprits for your weight woes, too. So here are a few cold, hard truths about why you're not losing weight. That's why exercise is so important in the weight- loss equation. But a lot of people overestimate how much they burn—and even use the . How many times have you faced a food temptation and thought, . For the exercise to help you lose, you can't re- eat all those extra calories you burned. And in most cases, we overestimate how many calories we actually burned and underestimate how many calories we're actually eating, which means using that 3- mile walk (2. If this sounds like you, you may be interested in our guides on what to eat before you workout and what to eat after you workout. The Takeaway: Exercise can help you lose when you're really using it to burn extra calories, not as a reason to eat more. You're relying on exercise alone to do the trick. Don’t Eat After 7 PM – Is Eating Late At Night Bad For Weight Loss? Yes, exercising can help you lose weight (and it has so many other health benefits) because it helps you create that calorie deficit needs to drop body fat. But here's the truth: Exercise alone will not help you lose weight. For emphasis, I'll say it again. If you are relying on exercise alone to lose weight, you are fighting an uphill battle. Exercise burns calories, but not as much as people think. When you consider how many calories you burn in a day, exercise burns very little. And it takes a lot of time and effort to burn even a few calories. A full hour of intense exercise may only burn 4. On the flipside, it's easy to eat hundreds or thousands of calories in even a few minutes. Eating less calories (therefore creating a caloric deficit) is the one and only requirement for losing weight. No other weight loss tip matters if you. But it would take hours of exercise to offset those calories. If you are not changing your diet and reducing your calorie intake, exercise alone probably won't help you much. You've got to have both (calorie reduction through diet and exercise) for optimal weight- loss results. Weight loss issues related to specific diseases include: As chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) advances, about 35% of patients experience severe weight loss. Worried about weight gain if you're eating meals late at night? It's worse to skip dinner than whip something up. Here, cooking ideas for healthy ways to chow down. The Takeaway: The best way to lose weight is to cut back on what you eat and increase your burn through exercise—not one or the other. You're not eating as healthfully as you think. I was diabetic but i had bariatric surgery and about 48 hours later my blood sugar levels went down to a normal range. I still take metformin to help with weight loss. We know that Americans and others who eat a Western- style diet have a lot of health problems—and weight problems. The vast majority of people are overweight these days. Yet research shows that the vast majority of people also think they eat healthfully and consider eating healthy a priority. Are you as confused about that as I am? Clearly, we are not eating that well if we continue to see steady increases in heart disease, type 2 diabetes, overweight and obesity. Here's the thing: We all think we eat pretty well. Even people who eat a pretty bad diet don't think it's that bad. No one really wants to admit that their diet might be pretty unhealthy. We all think we're probably doing better than others. This is especially true if you compare your diet to what you see your friends, family or co- workers eat and consider your choices to be . Research confirms that people underestimate the quantity of food they eat, so read labels and measure. You're doing the wrong kinds of exercise. If you are exercising regularly, you're already doing a very important thing to improve your health. But when it comes to exercising for weight loss, there's a lot of confusion out there. One day you hear that strength training is the best way to lose weight. The next day you're told to focus on cardio—but not just any cardio, intervals. Then you hear it has to be high intensity intervals or Tabata training. What gives? The truth is that all types of exercise will burn calories, which can help with weight loss. But when it comes to losing weight, it's all about burning calories. And in most cases, cardio is the calorie- burning king. Strength training is important, too (for many reasons), such as reducing the amount of muscle loss that occurs during weight loss, but it's typically not a major calorie burner. So if you are relying almost exclusively on strength training as your weight- loss strategy, it could backfire. The Takeaway: The best exercise plan emphasizes cardio for calorie burning, but still includes strength training to preserve lean muscle. Both are important; neither option can do everything. You're not being consistent enough. When you're struggling to lose those final 5- 1. Maybe you don't even make it a few days . Or perhaps you do feel pretty consistent in your habits, but the occasional slice of birthday cake or drinks with friends happens more often than just occasionally. Eating that restaurant dessert that's 4- 5 times a standard serving size (and packed more sugar and fat than seems physically possible) doesn't really count as moderation, even if it's the only sweet treat you've had all week. Moderation needs to apply not just to the frequency of treats or rest days, but the amount, too. Practice portion control—so that you don't go overboard and set yourself back. The Takeaway: Eat right and exercise as consistently as possible and apply both moderation and portion control when it comes to indulging. You're not measuring the right things. A lot of people complain that they're not seeing the scale move, even though they are losing inches and clothing sizes. Despite these obvious signs that they're getting leaner, they still want to see the scale change. If you are noticing other improvements in your body shape or size, you are losing fat. The scale might not always reflect that you've lose weight—but ultimately it is the shape of your body and the amount of lean muscle vs. The Takeaway: Don't just rely on the scale to measure your weight loss. That number won't really tell you everything you need to know. You don't need to lose weight. If you are at a healthy BMI or a body fat percentage in the healthy range, you probably don't need to lose weight for any health or medical reasons. Still, you may want to lose some pounds for vanity's sake, or even to improve your athletic performance. There's nothing inherently wrong with wanting to lose weight when you're already at an acceptable weight. But, when you only have only a little body fat to lose, it can be extremely challenging for some people. Your body is usually content to be right where it is, weight- wise. It's certainly possible to drop your body fat percentage and get leaner, but it will often take even more dedication—and time—than it will for someone who has a lot of weight to lose. For some, it may involve dieting or exercising to extremes rather than a moderate amount. But with diligence and some experimentation, you can get there—especially if you follow the other tips outlined here (consistency being #1). You have an underlying issue. When all else fails and you've truly adhered to your program—and all the advice here—and you're still not losing weight, you may secretly wish you had some kind of underlying medical problem that would explain it—a slow thyroid, some kind of hormonal disorder, or something that popping a pill could fix and then magically help melt away the pounds. While it is true that people with certain medical issues or on certain medications can have trouble losing weight, most people struggle with losing it because they struggle with consistently burning more calories than they eat. The only way to do it is to track, measure and weigh your food honestly and accurately, and burn excess calories through increased physical activity. Here are a few other common reasons you may not be losing weight despite doing everything right: Weight loss seems simple, but it doesn't happen easily. But many, many people just like you have fought the battle and won—and you can, too. Ask for help and support. And slowly but surely, you will get there. Can you relate to any of these tips? What do you think is the main reason people struggle with weight loss? How to travel cheap – travel full- time on less than $1. Work While Traveling. Learn the Truth About Volunteering. Become a Part of a Community. Avoid the Biggest Trap. Be Food Wise. Roll with the Punches. Rethink Travel Expenses. Travel Slowly. Tip #1 – Save 8. Airfare. If you solely use the big online search engines to book your flights, there is a good chance that you are overpaying – sometimes dramatically. I will demonstrate with a case study. For the purposes of this case study, I arbitrarily decided to fly one- way from Paris to Madrid on June 1. In performing my search on Orbitz, the cheapest fare came from Air Brussels for $2. US. At first blush this seems like a terrific deal, considering the next highest price came in at $9. US. But before I got all excited and booked the flight, I checked a few other sites, the first of which is called Which Budget. By simply plugging in my starting point and destination, I was given a listing of all the budget airlines that fly this route – many of which are not indexed with the larger search engines. If no options appear in your Which Budget search, the alternative is to do a series of Internet searches to find other airlines that fly this route. A great starting place is to find the website for your departing or arriving airport, which often lists the airlines it caters to. In my search, Ryanair was one of the options that came up, and before I knew it, I had found a flight on the same day, direct no less (the Air Brussels option had a stopover), for. This works out to a whopping $4. US. Not only did I get a direct flight by doing a little extra research, but I saved more than 8. Words of Caution/Wisdom for Saving Airfare. Be prepared to fly from other terminals or airports entirely. If you are booking connecting flights, ensure that you are arriving at and departing from the same airport, or that there is enough time for you to hustle to your new departure point. Watch the luggage rules. Many budget airlines cut their costs by charging for checked- baggage by weight. If you don’t pre- pay for your checked bags, or if you exceed the limit you paid for, you could face some hefty fines. Don’t expect to be wined or dined; not feeding guests is a common budget airline tactic. It’s no loss really – just pack some snacks. Other Flying Tips. Flying mid- week is usually the cheapest time. Picking your seats doesn’t have to be a shot in the dark with Seat Guru. Tip #2 – Work for Accommodation. One of the biggest expenses for a traveler is accommodation. Working (or rather, volunteering) in trade for accommodation – also known as caretaking – is a great way to meet the locals, learn about the land, and get off the beaten path. All the while saving thousands of dollars on places to sleep. Although most people think of WWOOFing (Willing Work on Organic Farms – we will discuss this in a minute) as the way to work in trade for accommodation, it is only the tip of the iceberg. There are work- trade gigs available in many countries, for people with a variety of skill sets. Among other things, I have milked goats, painted murals, manned reception, cleaned cottages, and maintained estates in trade for my accommodation. My accommodation has varied in nature from five- star accommodations, to camper vans, to tiny shared hostel rooms, to Oceanside yurts (photo to the right is the view from my yurt). And you would be surprised at the lack of correlation between quality of accommodation and work expectations. Every position is unique and offers something different to the lucky (sometimes not so lucky) applicant. Here are six resources that will allow you to find the work- trade arrangement that is perfect for you: Caretaker’s Gazette – This is one of the most useful resources I have found to date. For the $3. 0 annual fee, you will receive listings from around the world for people who are willing to offer rent- free living (and sometimes food too) in trade for your work. Work situations vary from house- sitting, to caring for the elderly, to farm work, campground maintenance, and beyond. House Carers – If all you want to do is watch the house and walk the dogs, House Carers is for you. Basic membership is free, and the full meal deal is about $4. A majority of the listings are in Australia and New Zealand. Organic Volunteers – For a $2. It is an easy platform to use, and you can converse with hosts using their system to protect your personal information. WWOOFing – As the most popular work- trade platform, you will find individual WWOOF membership plans for each country. After paying your fee (which varies from country to country), you will receive a booklet detailing the WWOOF hosts in the area and what they are looking for. It is recommended that you get your WWOOF booklet well in advance of your trip, as some are not fully online and will only mail you their listings. Help Exchange – With a free basic membership (and a nominal premium membership which allows you to converse with hosts using their online platform), you can browse listings around the world which entail a variety of work- trade duties. The sky is the limit. Work Away – This platform is very similar to the ones above, and costs . Many countries allow volunteer work in exchange for room and board. Disadvantages of Work- Trade Arrangements. Sometimes having your boss and your landlord as the same person can be troublesome. If you have a falling- out, you will not only be out of a job, but looking for a new place to live – and fast. Privacy (or lack thereof) can be an issue, depending on the situation. Sometimes you have to do grunt work. The arrangement generally lasts only a few days as opposed to the weeks and even months that a work- trade gig will last, so it is more geared towards active travelers. What’s in it for the host? They get to meet you, proudly show their home town to you, and live vicariously through your stories of adventure and travel. So while budgeting your free or almost- free trip, don’t forget to add in this cost. Here are four resources for you to find the right hospitality exchange: Couch Surfing – Couch Surfing is arguably the most well- known hospitality exchange, although not the first. Your bed for the night can take the form of a couch, extra bedroom, or chunk of the floor depending on what your host can offer. You can browse online listings, learn about and converse with your potential host online, and make arrangements to meet. Safety checks are in place to ensure no dodgy travelers/hosts ruin it for everybody, but as with all the opportunities listed in this section, please do your due diligence and go with your gut instincts to be safe. Hospitality Club – I have used Hospitality Club to stay in a few Australian homes and meet new friends in other places in the world. The platform is similar to Couch Surfing with checks and balances, and a wide variety of members can make this site an adventure to surf. Global Freeloaders – If the platform or profiles on Couch Surfing and Hospitality Club aren’t doing much for you, then check out what Global Freeloaders has to offer. The only stipulation to membership is that you must be able to reciprocate and offer up your home to travelers within six months of signing up. So if you are on a long trip, best to wait until you get home unless you can host travelers before you leave. Servas – With over 5. Servas is considered to be a pioneer in the hospitality exchange arena, and is recognized by the United Nations. The membership application process is more grueling, and requires a personal interview before acceptance. Fees vary from country to country, and many country listings are not yet available online (instead, they are mailed to you). Although I don’t doubt the quality of candidate screening and such, I find it much easier to use the other three options above. Tip #4 – Work While Traveling. There are a few ways you can keep the money flowing while traveling long- term, depending on your skills and desires. Here are three: Freelancing on the Web. With an increasing trend towards telecommuting, the widespread use of social media, and online businesses cropping up everywhere, it is quite possible to make a living online while you travel, with little more than an internet connection. Personally, I make my millions (ha) as a writer, the income of which pays my expenses over and above accommodation (which I usually work in trade for). I know another fellow whose websites and freelance SEO work make him over $3,0. Freelancing on the Web is possible in many careers, even if at first it may not seem so. If you are new to the concept of being an Internet business- person, then start slow; subscribe to newsletters, lurk forums, and watch how other people in your line of work are making a go of it. Combine this prep work with an ingenious idea, and you could end up laughing all the way to the bank. Either way.)Working Visas. If you are under the age of 3. Almond Butter’s Benefits: Almond butter is, first and foremost, an ideal source of protein. Protein is crucial for tissue regeneration and repair. Regular almond consumption appears to positively affect insulin sensitivity and so individuals with prediabetes may benefit from including almond butter in their respective diets as well. Also, individuals looking to lose weight may be aided by eating almond butter as it has been found in a study that eating nuts, specifically an almond- enriched diet, helps in weight loss and management. Though these compounds naturally exist in food, animals, and humans, too much concentration of oxalates in the human body can cause physical maladies. It is for this reason individuals with kidney and gall bladder issues, and therefore have trouble breaking down oxalates, should consult their doctors prior to including almond butter in their respective diets. Almonds, the primary ingredient in almond butter, are considered a type of tree nut. Tree nuts belong to the eight most common food allergens in the United States. Food allergens do not have to be eaten in considerable amounts or in their basest forms for allergic reactions to manifest. For instance, eating minute amounts of almonds from store- bought cookies, should you happen to be allergic to this tree nut, may already result in allergies. If you happen to be allergic to tree nuts, make sure to consult with your doctor first to ensure that including almond butter in your diet won’t cause severe health problems later on.
