The Mediterranean diet is a mix of the culinary traditions of the Mediterranean sea. It's mostly a whole foods plant based diet based on fruits and veggies. One of the most curious diets that I’ve had the chance to review, the General Motors diet (also known as the GM Diet plan) is a 7 day eating plan which is supposed. Can you really lose fat while enjoying sirloin steak, chicken parmesan, chocolate, and real butter? If you ask Kurt, the 47-year old grandpa who lost 50 pounds in 6. One of the leading meal delivery and meal replacement diets, Medifast has been serving men and women since 1980. Read our review of The Raspberry Ketone & The Colon Cleanse Diet, Free Trial Scam. Obesity and top killers such as diabetes, heart disease, Alzheimer's and cancer have something significant in common — they're all rooted in insulin and leptin resistance. Sugars found in processed foods and grains are the primary culprits, and the standard American diet is chockfull of both. This is good news, as it significantly simplifies your approach to improving your health. You won't need a different set of strategies to address each condition. So how do you correct these metabolic imbalances? Your diet is key. The timing of your meals can also play an important role. Nutritional Ketosis May Be Key for Optimal Health. By eating a healthy high- fat, low- carbohydrate and low- to moderate- protein diet, you enter into what is known as nutritional ketosis: a state in which your body burns fat as its primary fuel rather than glucose (sugar). Mounting research suggests nutritional ketosis is the answer to a long list of health problems, starting with obesity. In fact, endurance athletes are turning away from conventional high- carb strategies and adopting this way of eating because it boosts physical stamina and endurance. Cancer is another area where ketogenic diets show great promise. Other benefits include fewer hunger pangs and a dramatic drop in food cravings once you've made the shift from burning sugar to burning fat as your primary fuel. Being an efficient fat burner may also boost your longevity. Researchers have identified about a dozen genes associated with longevity. According to Jeff Volek, Ph. D., a registered dietitian and professor in the Human Science Department at Ohio State University, who has done enormous work in the field of high- fat, low- carbohydrate diets and has authored several books on this topic, the primary function of one of these genes is to cripple the degradation of branched- chain amino acids (BCAAs), such as leucine. Preventing this degradation can help preserve your muscle mass. BCAAs have other benefits as well: In a number of studies involving middle- aged animal models, adding BCAAs increased muscle and cardiac mitochondrial biogenesis (the creation of new mitochondria), improving both health span and longevity. Interestingly, BCAAs are very similar in structure to ketones — energy molecules created by your liver from fats — and ketones seem to be preferentially metabolized. In other words, ketones spare those branched- chain amino acids, leaving higher levels of them in circulation while also helping you retain muscle mass and promoting longevity. Ketones — A Healthy, Clean- Burning Fuel. The primary reason that so many people are overweight and/or in poor health these days is that the Westernized diet is overloaded with non- fiber carbs as the primary fuel, which in turn inhibit your body's ability to access and burn body fat. High- quality fats, meanwhile, are a far preferable fuel, as they are utilized far more efficiently than carbs. When you burn fat as your primary fuel, your respiratory quotient (the amount of oxygen you need) typically goes down,2 which is a sign that your metabolism is running more efficiently. How to Enter Into Nutritional Ketosis. The most efficient way to train your body to use fat for fuel is to remove most of the sugars and starches from your diet, and that's true for everyone, whether you're an elite athlete or a sedentary diabetic. At the same time, you'll want to replace those carbs with healthy fats. This is only a generalization, as each person responds to foods in a different way. Some people can enter into full ketosis while eating as much as 7. Others, especially if you're insulin resistant or have type 2 diabetes, may require less than 4. This will give you an objective measure of whether or not you're truly in ketosis, rather than just relying on counting the grams of carbohydrates you consume. Nutritional ketosis is defined as blood ketones that stay in the range of 0. L). My first choice is Cronometer. That's my upgrade to the basic Cronometer nutrient tracker, and the default is set to macronutrient levels that will support nutritional ketosis. Avoid Milk and Consider MCT Oil. Aside from added sugars and grains, it is best to avoid milk for the time being, as it can be difficult to stay in ketosis if you eat or drink a lot of it. The galactose in milk is a carbohydrate and you can easily exceed your net carb allotment by drinking a single glass of milk. Casein, the primary protein in milk, can also trigger or contribute to inflammation. When you keep net carbs low, your body switches to burning fat for fuel and your liver begins to convert some of that fat into ketone bodies. This is endogenous production, meaning that they are made by your body from your fat stores or from the fats in the foods that you eat. You can boost your level of ketones by taking them in supplement form, but these exogenous ketones (made in a lab, not in your body) are not likely to be as beneficial unless you are already . Based on my understanding of mitochondrial health and metabolic function, a vast majority of health conditions could fall into this category. One of the conditions for which a ketogenic diet has the longest and best documented track record is epilepsy. This diet has been effectively used to treat drug resistant epileptic seizures since the 1. In my view, it would be wise to implement a ketogenic diet as a first- line therapy, but in conventional medicine, it's typically not considered or recommended unless the patient fails to respond to medication. Even then, this conversation may have to be initiated by the patient, or the parent of a child with seizures. As noted in the featured article: 5. This is also known as a 4: 1 ketogenic diet because it provides four times as much fat as protein and carbs combined. The modified Atkins diet (MAD) is based on a considerably less restrictive 1: 1 ratio of fat to protein and carbs. It has been shown to be equally effective for seizure control in most adults and children older than two years of age. While fats are unable to cross the blood brain barrier, ketones, being water- soluble fats, can cross it and feed your brain. They also appear to lower markers of systemic inflammation, such as IL- 6 and others. Many times, improved cognition and mental acuity are among the first things people notice when entering nutritional ketosis. Ketones are the preferred source of energy for your brain in general, but especially for those affected by diabetes, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and maybe even ALS, because in these diseases certain neurons have become insulin resistant or have lost the ability to efficiently utilize glucose, which causes the neurons to die off. When ketones are present, these neurons have a better chance of surviving and thriving. As noted in the featured article, . They also do not need insulin to help them cross cell membranes, including neuronal membranes. Instead, they use simple diffusion, so they can even enter cells that have become insulin resistant. This is likely one of the reasons nutritional ketosis works so well for a variety of neurological problems and diseases. It even shows promise for. Migraine headaches: Following a ketogenic diet for four weeks has been shown to reduce migraine frequency and lower the use of pain medication. Traumatic brain injuries: Animal studies suggest it can help reduce brain swelling, improve motor function and speed up recovery, although it appears more effective in the young than the old. Human studies still need to validate these findings. Metabolic Conditions Improve on Ketogenic Diet Nutritional ketosis is also indicated for obesity, metabolic syndrome (prediabetes) and diabetes. This is not surprising, considering the fact that one of its beneficial effects is correcting insulin resistance. If you meet at least three of the following criteria, you may be diagnosed with metabolic syndrome: abdominal obesity, elevated triglycerides, low HDL cholesterol, high blood pressure and/or elevated fasting blood sugar. Nutritional ketosis has been shown to improve most of these. Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), which is strongly associated with obesity, type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome, has also been shown to improve on a low- carb diet high in healthy fats. In one study,1. 3 obese men diagnosed with metabolic syndrome and NAFLD showed significant improvement in their weight, blood pressure, liver enzymes and liver fat after four months on a ketogenic diet; 2. NAFLD. Glycogen storage disease (GSD) and glucose transporter 1 (GLUT1) deficiency syndrome are two other conditions for which a ketogenic diet is a literal life saver. GSD is characterized by a lack of an enzyme that helps store glucose as glycogen or break glycogen down into glucose. The exact form of the disease depends on which enzyme in question that's lacking. As noted by Authority Nutrition. However, early research suggests that a ketogenic diet may benefit people with some forms of GSD, . Seizures and impaired motor skills are two common symptoms that typically manifest shortly after birth. The benefit of a ketogenic diet is quite apparent in this case, as ketones do not need this protein in order to enter your brain. Hence ketones are an ideal fuel for GLUT1 deficient people, allowing their brains to function more normally. Hormonal and Nervous System Disorders May Improve on Ketogenic Diet. Your hormone regulation and nervous system may also benefit from being an effective fat burner. Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and multiple sclerosis (MS) are two conditions that appear to respond well to this switch in primary fuel. Glyphosate - Wikipedia. Glyphosate. Names. IUPAC name. N- (phosphonomethyl)glycine. Other names. 2- . It is an organophosphorus compound, specifically a phosphonate. It is used to kill weeds, especially annual broadleaf weeds and grasses that compete with crops. It was discovered to be an herbicide by Monsanto chemist John E. Franz in 1. 97. 0. In 2. 00. 7, glyphosate was the most used herbicide in the United States' agricultural sector and the second- most used in home and garden (2,4- D being the most used), government and industry, and commerce. It inhibits a plant enzyme involved in the synthesis of three aromatic amino acids: tyrosine, tryptophan, and phenylalanine. Therefore, it is effective only on actively growing plants and is not effective as a pre- emergence herbicide. An increasing number of crops have been genetically engineered to be tolerant of glyphosate (e. Roundup Ready soybean, the first Roundup Ready crop, also created by Monsanto) which allows farmers to use glyphosate as a postemergence herbicide against weeds. The development of glyphosate resistance in weed species is emerging as a costly problem. While glyphosate and formulations such as Roundup have been approved by regulatory bodies worldwide, concerns about their effects on humans and the environment persist. The German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment toxicology review in 2. The work was never published. Monsanto chemists had synthesized about 1. Two were found to have weak herbicidal activity, and John E. Franz, a chemist at Monsanto, was asked to try to make analogs with stronger herbicidal activity. Glyphosate was the third analog he made. Duke and Stephen B. Powles, an Australian weed expert — described glyphosate as a . Both the phosphonic acid and carboxylic acid moieties can be ionised and the amine group can be protonated and the substance exists as a series of zwitterions. Glyphosate is soluble in water to 1. The original synthetic approach to glyphosate involved the reaction of phosphorus trichloride with formaldehyde followed by hydrolysis to yield a phosphonate. Glycine is then reacted with this phosphonate to yield glyphosate, and its name is taken as a contraction of the compounds used in this synthesis - viz. The first is to react iminodiacetic acid with phosphorous acid and hydrochloric acid (sometimes formed in situ by addition of phosphorus trichloride) via a modified Mannich reaction. Oxidation then leads to the desired glyphosate product. Iminodiacetic acid is usually prepared on- site, such as by reaction of chloroacetic acid with ammonia and calcium hydroxide to produce the calcium iminodiacetate salt and then acidification of the product. When hydrogen cyanide is readily available as a by- product (say), an alternative approach is to use iminodiacetonitrile, HN(CH2. CN)2, and diethanolamine is also a suitable starting material. Glycine and paraformaldehyde are reacted in a suitable organic solvent (typically triethylamine and methanol) to produce bishydroxymethylglycine, (HOCH2)2. NCH2. COOH. Dimethyl phosphite is then introduced and work- up with hydrochloric acid cleaves the hydroxymethyl group from the nitrogen atom whilst heating speeds the hydrolysis of both phosphate ester linkages. It does this by inhibiting the enzyme 5- enolpyruvylshikimate- 3- phosphate synthase (EPSPS), which catalyzes the reaction of shikimate- 3- phosphate (S3. P) and phosphoenolpyruvate to form 5- enolpyruvyl- shikimate- 3- phosphate (EPSP). While growth stops within hours of application, it takes several days for the leaves to begin turning yellow. Ground and surface water pollution is limited. Though both glyphosate and AMPA are commonly detected in water bodies, a portion of the AMPA detected may actually be the result of degradation of detergents rather than from glyphosate. The mechanism of glyphosate sorption to soil is similar to that of phosphate fertilizers, the presence of which can reduce glyphosate sorption. If glyphosate reaches surface water, it is not broken down readily by water or sunlight. Soil and climate conditions affect glyphosate's persistence in soil. The median half- life of glyphosate in water varies from a few to 9. A site in Iowa had a half- life of 1. In this case, the persistence of AMPA was attributed to the soil being frozen for most of the year. However, a field test showed that lettuce, carrots, and barley contained glyphosate residues up to one year after the soil was treated with 3. By volume, it is one of the most widely used herbicides. It has a relatively small effect on some clover species and morning glory. The controlled application is usually combined with a selective herbicide and traditional methods of weed eradication such as mulching to achieve an optimal effect. However, up to 2. A version of the enzyme that was both resistant to glyphosate and that was still efficient enough to drive adequate plant growth was identified by Monsanto scientists after much trial and error in an Agrobacterium strain called CP4, which was found surviving in a waste- fed column at a glyphosate production facility. In 1. 99. 6, genetically modified soybeans were made commercially available. Various salt formulations include isopropylamine, diammonium, monoammonium, or potassium as the counterion. Some brands include more than one salt. Some companies report their product as acid equivalent (ae) of glyphosate acid, or some report it as active ingredient (ai) of glyphosate plus the salt, and others report both. To compare performance of different formulations, knowledge of how the products were formulated is needed. Given that different salts have different weights, the acid equivalent is a more accurate method of expressing and comparing concentrations. Adjuvant loading refers to the amount of adjuvant. Fully loaded products contain all the necessary adjuvants, including surfactant; some contain no adjuvant system, while other products contain only a limited amount of adjuvant (minimal or partial loading) and additional surfactants must be added to the spray tank before application. The most common formulation in agriculture is 3. More commonly, rates of 3 l/ha are practiced for control of annual weeds between crops. Another important ingredient in some formulations is the surfactantpolyethoxylated tallow amine. Monsanto also produces seeds which grow into plants genetically engineered to be tolerant to glyphosate. The genes contained in these seeds are patented. Such crops allow farmers to use glyphosate as a postemergence herbicide against most broadleaf and cereal weeds. Soy was the first glyphosate- resistant crop. In 2. 00. 3 Monsanto patented the use of glyphosate as an antiparasitic. However, in addition to glyphosate salts, commercial formulations of glyphosate contain additives such as surfactants which vary in nature and concentration. The surfactants are added to enable the glyphosate to penetrate the cuticle of the plants. Toxicologists have studied glyphosate alone and formulations. Glyphosate alone. The LD5. 0 of glyphosate is 5,0. The acute dermal LD5. Indications of glyphosate toxicity in animals typically appear within 3. These include the induction of positive trends in the incidence of renal tubule carcinoma and haemangiosarcoma in male mice, and increased pancreatic islet- cell adenoma in male rats. Evidence also shows that such herbicides cause direct electrophysiological changes in the cardiovascular systems of rats and rabbits. The 9. 6- hour LC5. Palaemonetas vulgaris) and 9. Uca pagilator). These values make glyphosate . Efficacy was described for numerous bacteria and fungi. Further research is required to determine the impact of glyphosate on earthworms in complex ecosystems. As agricultural spray adjuvants, surfactants may be mixed into commercial formulations, such as Roundup, or they may be purchased separately and mixed on- site (tank mix). Polyethoxylated tallow amine (POEA) is a surfactant used in the original Roundup formulation and was still being commonly used in 2. A 1. 99. 7 US government report said that Roundup is 1. POEA while Roundup Pro is 1. Workers exposed to glyphosate were about twice as likely to get B cell lymphoma. These effects are probably due to the preservative benzisothiazolin- 3- one. Severe skin burns are very rare. Eye exposure may lead to mild conjunctivitis. Superficial corneal injury is possible if irrigation is delayed or inadequate. More severe cases cause . These habitats do not necessarily constitute formal water- bodies and can contain higher concentrations of pesticide compared to larger water- bodies. These effects include interference with gill morphology and mortality from either the loss of osmotic stability or asphyxiation. At sub- lethal concentrations, exposure to POEA or glyphosate/POEA formulations have been reported to be associated with delayed development, accelerated development, reduced size at metamorphosis, developmental malformations of the tail, mouth, eye and head, histological indications of intersex and symptoms of oxidative stress. According to the authors, the use of glyphosate- based pesticides cannot be considered the major cause of amphibian decline, the bulk of which occurred prior to the widespread use of glyphosate or in pristine tropical areas with minimal glyphosate exposure. The authors recommended further study of species- and development- stage chronic toxicity, of environmental glyphosate levels, and ongoing analysis of data relevant to determining what if any role glyphosate might be playing in worldwide amphibian decline, and suggest including amphibians in standardized test batteries. Selection for this program is based on a compound's prevalence of use and does not imply particular suspicion of endocrine activity. The Weight of Evidence conclusion stated . It found that . Vytenis Andriukaitis, European Commissioner for Health and Food Safety, wrote an open letter to the Chair of the Board of the Glyphosate Task at Monsanto Europe asking to publish the full studies provided to the EFSA. But Dr. Mark Hyman’s new diet sounded so fundamental that I decided to go through the regimen of low- starch and low- glycemic whole foods, regular exercise and detox baths. In the end, eliminating all sweeteners, additives and inflammatory foods made me a whole new woman — once I got past the painful withdrawal symptoms of the first few days. Those headaches on my first day without coffee made me nauseated and irritable (just ask my co- workers). I was also achy, shaky and sweaty as the sugar and additives left my system. Jonesing for java wasn’t my only headache. Eating clean doesn’t come cheap when you’re starting out. Stocking my kitchen with Hyman’s shopping list, which included whole foods like raw almond butter, chia seeds and fresh kale, ran a whopping $2. But once I cross- checked what I spent on takeout for lunch and dinner the two weeks before (not to mention my daily pit stops at Starbucks and Dunkin’ Donuts), I realized I’d coughed up more than $2. Now I was saving money (and myself) by cooking Hyman’s recipes. Parting with sugar obviously isn’t sweet sorrow. I didn’t fully realize how sick I’d been feeling until things began improving. By Day Four, I was waking up refreshed at 7 a. I got into a rhythm of bouncing out of bed, going for a run, making a breakfast smoothie and going to work more alert than I’d been in months. Who knew I could be a morning person? My sleep became deeper, and I started recalling more dreams. My skin cleared up. And ladies, my PMS symptoms went from severe to almost nonexistent. Plus, I learned to cook! The girl who could barely open a can in the past can now grill a salmon steak or stuff a chicken breast. The detox lifestyle eats up a lot of time. Cooking can be easy, but it’s much slower than just zapping something in the microwave or ordering takeout. But I learned, and making a big batch of detox chicken soup over the weekend or reheating detox meal leftovers was a lifesaver on days when I didn’t have time to cook. Then I fell off the wagon — and found out just how healthy I had become. I had finished the 1. Guinness and a piece of chocolate. That’s grains, gluten, dairy, alcohol and sugar — the evil substances I had eschewed for 1. The next day, I felt like a garbage truck had run over me. My stomach was upset, and I was sluggish and bloated. Fortunately, it’s never too late to get back on track.“Give yourself permission to fail,” says Hyman, who recommends doing this detox three or four times a year to reboot your body the way you’d change the oil in your car. So I’m back on the detox, but adding nongluten grains to see how I feel before bringing dairy and the others back. Eventually I’ll be able to enjoy treats in moderation while understanding how they affect me. But sorry, Starbucks — I’m feeling so good without coffee that I might be skipping my Grande Pike indefinitely. RULES TO LIVE BY1. Don’t pour on pounds. Whether you want to lose weight, build muscle or improve any aspect of your body or health, setting up your entire diet plan correctly is an absolute requirement for reaching any of these types of goals. The problem is, between your daily calorie, protein, fat and carb intake and the food sources you’re getting these nutrients from, diet and nutrition tends to be the area people screw up the most. In fact, our diet plan is often the area we barely even care about in the first place. I hear it all the time. People tell me all about their workout routines and what exercises and muscle groups they train on what days and how much weight they lift for how many sets and reps and blah blah blah, but when I ask them about their diet plan, the answer is usually “it’s okay” or “I think it’s pretty good.”In reality however it’s often terrible, and it’s the #1 reason you’re not losing fat or building muscle or getting the results you want. The truth is, if your diet plan isn’t set up the way it needs to be for your goal to be reached, then your goal WILL NOT be reached. Simple as that. So, how should you eat to support your goal? How do you figure out what your daily calorie, protein, fat and carb intake needs to be and what food sources those nutrients should and should not come from? How do you set up your ideal diet plan? Here now is a free guide that contains all of those answers. Let’s begin. As you will see, protein, fat and carbs definitely matter as well, but nothing influences your ability to lose weight, gain weight, build muscle or do anything similar as much as calories do. This is because everything we eat and drink (besides obvious calorie- free items like water) contains calories, and everything we do (exercise, getting dressed, breathing, digesting food, etc.) burns calories. Looking for boosted energy, mental sharpness, workout efficiency and/or weight control? Adding healthy carbs to your diet (in moderation) could help you. Although my initial plan was to include this post in All You Need to Know About Carbs on Low-Carb Ketogenic Diet, I decided it deserves to be discussed separately. How to figure net carbs and understand why net carbs are important. Sugar, fiber, what does it all mean for the keto diet lifestyle? Complex Carbs. All carbs prompt the brain to make more serotonin. For a steady supply of this feel-good chemical, it's best to eat complex carbs, which take longer to.The difference between how many calories we consume and how many calories we burn is the most important factor in every diet plan. There is a certain number of calories that your body requires every day in order for it to maintain your current weight. We call this your “daily calorie maintenance level.” It’s the amount of calories your body requires each day in order to do EVERYTHING it needs to do. Now, if your diet plan is made up of more, less or the same amount of calories as your maintenance level, 1 of 3 things will always happen. This is a requirement for building muscle. If you eat LESS calories than your maintenance level, you will lose weight. Question: What exactly is the difference between good carbs and bad carbs? Most people can’t tell a good carbohydrate from a bad one if their life depended on it. But it does. Carbohydrates have gotten a bad rap of late. South Beach Diet Food List. During Phase 1, the foods eaten will be in controlled portions to include chicken, beef, turkey, fish, and shellfish. This is a requirement for losing fat. If you eat the SAME amount of calories as your maintenance level, your weight will stay the same. This is a requirement for maintaining your current weight. And these are really the most important things you need to know about your daily calorie intake and just creating a proper diet plan in general. These 3 simple facts are what most of the population fail to learn, understand, or just pay attention to, and it’s the #1 reason why their body isn’t doing what they want it to do. How do you estimate your maintenance level? The first step in figuring out what your daily calorie intake needs to be is estimating what your maintenance level is. There are quite a few ways to do this, but the easiest is to multiply your current body weight in pounds by 1. Somewhere between those 2 amounts will usually be your maintenance level. Women, people who are less active, or people who think they have a slower metabolism should use the lower end of their range. Men, people who are more active, or people who think they have a faster metabolism should use the higher end of their range. People who are unsure should just pick a number in the middle. Another way to estimate your daily calorie maintenance level is with the calculator below. Just fill it in and click “Calculate!”Calorie Maintenance Calculator. How do you adjust your daily calorie intake for your goal? Now that you have a good estimate of what your maintenance level is, it’s time to adjust it for your specific goal. Just eat your maintenance level amount each day. To ensure your daily calorie intake is indeed what it should be, all you need to do is weigh yourself about once per week first thing in the morning before eating or drinking anything, and monitor if your weight is moving in the right direction at the ideal rate. For losing weight, 1- 2lbs lost per week is usually perfect. For gaining weight or building muscle, 0. So, if that’s happening, you’re perfect. Continue eating this daily calorie intake from that point on. But if it’s not, then you just need to adjust up or down in small 2. Yup, just that simple. Now that your daily calorie intake is set up, it’s time to set up the protein, fat and carbs that will supply these calories. Daily Protein Intake. The next most important part of your diet plan is your daily protein intake. Because as I explain in my article about the high protein diet, protein is the building block of muscle, it plays a huge role in controlling your hunger and keeping you satisfied, and, if weight loss is your goal, it’s the dietary key to ensuring that the weight you lose is fat and not muscle. These benefits are the reason why protein supplements are so damn popular and you’ll never hear anyone recommend a low protein diet. The question is, what does your daily protein intake need to be to get all of these benefits? What is your ideal daily protein intake? My article about finding your ideal amount of protein per day answers this question in detail, but the quick and simple answer is that most people looking to improve their body should usually be eating between 0. Most people should use their current body weight when doing this calculation (so a 1. What are the best sources of protein? Some common high quality sources of protein include. There are primarily 4 different types of fat (trans, saturated, monounsaturated and polyunsaturated), and each has a significantly different effect on the human body. My article about Good Fats vs Bad Fats explains this in detail. The short version is that trans fat should be avoided completely, saturated fat should typically be limited to no more than 1/3 of your total daily fat intake, and monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats should comprise the majority of it. A definite extra emphasis should be placed on getting enough of a specific polyunsaturated fatty acid. My article about Omega- 3 Fish Oil Supplements explains why it’s so important. What is your ideal daily fat intake? In most cases, somewhere between 2. So, just figure out what 2. I’ll show you a full example of how to do this in a minute. What are the best sources of fat? Some common high quality sources of fat include. The reason we left carbs for last is because out of the 3 macronutrients that supply our daily calories (protein, fat and carbs), carbs are the least important. As my article about how many grams of carbs you should eat per day explains, carbs are extremely useful and a sufficient amount should definitely be eaten. However, protein and fat are the only macronutrients that are truly essential to the human body and MUST be present in our diet plan in order to live and function. Carbs aren’t, although we definitely live and function much better when we eat them. Here’s why this is important. That might sound confusing, but it’s not. Remember the daily calorie intake you calculated before? Subtract calories from protein and calories from fat from that amount. Whatever amount of calories are still left over, those calories will come from carbs. Here’s a step- by- step example. Since 1 gram of protein contains 4 calories, that means 6. Next, since 2. 5% of your calories should come from fat, this example person can calculate that 5. To figure out how many grams of fat that would be, they’d just divide 5. So that’s 6. 00 calories from protein plus 5. Now they’d just subtract 1. Since 1 gram of carbs contains 4 calories, this example person can see that they should eat 2. You’d just repeat this same process using your actual daily calorie, protein, fat and carb intake instead of the example amounts I just used. What are the best sources of carbs? Some common high quality sources of carbs include? Well, I can explain all of those answers in just 3 simple words: it doesn’t matter. Everything you’ve heard about a certain type of diet organization being beneficial for losing weight or building muscle is either a lie, a myth, or complete crap. Ignore it all. D- Fructofuranose. 2 Sweeteners Limit or Avoid: Choose these: Agave syrup Caramel Fructose High Fructose Corn Syrup Honey Invert Sugar. Hello Fructose Free Folks! This food list is from my Dietitian, and is significantly less scary than some of the other lists you can find online. By far the biggest source of high fructose corn syrup in most American diets through, are sugary beverages like soda, D- Fructose (open- chain form)Ball- and- stick model of D- fructose. Names. IUPAC name(3. R,4. S)- 1,3,4,5,6- Pentahydroxy- 2- hexanone. Other names. Fruit sugar. It is one of the three dietary monosaccharides, along with glucose and galactose, that are absorbed directly into the bloodstream during digestion. Fructose was discovered by French chemist Augustin- Pierre Dubrunfaut in 1. Crystalline fructose is the monosaccharide, dried, ground, and of high purity. High- fructose corn syrup (HFCS) is a mixture of glucose and fructose as monosaccharides. Sucrose is a compound with one molecule of glucose covalently linked to one molecule of fructose. All forms of fructose, including fruits and juices, are commonly added to foods and drinks for palatability and taste enhancement, and for browning of some foods, such as baked goods. About 2. 40,0. 00 tonnes of crystalline fructose are produced annually. Crystalline fructose adopts a cyclic six- membered structure owing to the stability of its hemiketal and internal hydrogen- bonding. This form is formally called D- fructopyranose. In solution, fructose exists as an equilibrium mixture of 7. The carbon dioxide released during fermentation will remain dissolved in water, where it will reach equilibrium with carbonic acid, unless the fermentation chamber is left open to the air. The dissolved carbon dioxide and carbonic acid produce the carbonation in bottled fermented beverages. Because fructose exists to a greater extent in the open- chain form than does glucose, the initial stages of the Maillard reaction occur more rapidly than with glucose. Therefore, fructose has potential to contribute to changes in food palatability, as well as other nutritional effects, such as excessive browning, volume and tenderness reduction during cake preparation, and formation of mutagenic compounds. This process, in the future, may become part of a low- cost, carbon- neutral system to produce replacements for petrol and diesel from plants. It is the sweetest of all naturally occurring carbohydrates. The relative sweetness of fructose has been reported in the range of 1. Warming fructose leads to formation of the 5- membered ring form. However it has been observed that the absolute sweetness of fructose is identical at 5 . Fructose can also enhance other flavors in the system. The relative sweetness of fructose blended with sucrose, aspartame, or saccharin is perceived to be greater than the sweetness calculated from individual components. Fructose is, therefore, difficult to crystallize from an aqueous solution. The primary reason that fructose is used commercially in foods and beverages, besides its low cost, is its high relative sweetness. It is the sweetest of all. People who eat a diet high in fructose are at increased risk of developing high blood pressure, or hypertension. The results of a study suggest that cutting back on. A new study in Clinical Epigenetics, suggests that the epidemic of autism amongst children in the U.S. The study by. High-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) is a manmade sweetener that’s found in a wide range of processed foods, from ketchup and cereals to crackers and salad dressings. Therefore, fructose can contribute a more palatable texture, and longer shelf life to the food products in which it is used. However, this characteristic may be undesirable in soft- serve or hard- frozen dairy desserts. The highest dietary sources of fructose, besides pure crystalline fructose, are foods containing table sugar (sucrose), high- fructose corn syrup, agave nectar, honey, molasses, maple syrup, fruit and fruit juices, as these have the highest percentages of fructose (including fructose in sucrose) per serving compared to other common foods and ingredients. Fructose exists in foods either as a free monosaccharide or bound to glucose as sucrose, a disaccharide. Fructose, glucose, and sucrose may all be present in a food; however, different foods will have varying levels of each of these three sugars. The sugar contents of common fruits and vegetables are presented in Table 1. In general, in foods that contain free fructose, the ratio of fructose to glucose is approximately 1: 1; that is, foods with fructose usually contain about an equal amount of free glucose. A value that is above 1 indicates a higher proportion of fructose to glucose, and below 1 a lower proportion. Some fruits have larger proportions of fructose to glucose compared to others. For example, apples and pears contain more than twice as much free fructose as glucose, while for apricots the proportion is less than half as much fructose as glucose. Apple and pear juices are of particular interest to pediatricians because the high concentrations of free fructose in these juices can cause diarrhea in children. The cells (enterocytes) that line children's small intestines have less affinity for fructose absorption than for glucose and sucrose. This phenomenon is discussed in greater detail in the Health Effects section. Table 1 also shows the amount of sucrose found in common fruits and vegetables. Sugarcane and sugar beet have a high concentration of sucrose, and are used for commercial preparation of pure sucrose. Extracted cane or beet juice is clarified, removing impurities; and concentrated by removing excess water. The end- product is 9. Sucrose- containing sugars include common table white granulated sugar and powdered sugar, as well as brown sugar. Sugar content of selected common plant foods (g/1. The fructose/glucose ratio is calculated by dividing the sum of free fructose plus half sucrose by the sum of free glucose plus half sucrose. Fructose is also found in the synthetically manufactured sweetener, high- fructose corn syrup (HFCS). Hydrolyzedcorn starch is used as the raw material for production of HFCS. Through the enzymatic treatment, glucose molecules are converted into fructose. The number for each HFCS corresponds to the percentage of synthesized fructose present in the syrup. HFCS- 9. 0 has the highest concentration of fructose, and typically, is used to manufacture HFCS- 5. HFCS- 5. 5 is used as sweetener in soft drinks, whereas HFCS- 4. Carbohydrate content of commercial sweeteners (percent on dry basis). Sugars and Sweeteners, Boca Raton, FL: CRC Press, Inc. However, with the development of HFCS, a significant shift occurred in the type of sweetener consumption in certain countries, particularly the United States. Contrary to the popular belief, however, with the increase of HFCS consumption, the total fructose intake relative to the total glucose intake has not dramatically changed. Granulated sugar is 9. The most commonly used forms of HFCS, HFCS- 4. HFCS- 5. 5 have a roughly equal ratio of fructose to glucose, with minor differences. HFCS has simply replaced sucrose as a sweetener. Therefore, despite the changes in the sweetener consumption, the ratio of glucose to fructose intake has remained relatively constant. Free fructose is absorbed directly by the intestine. When fructose is consumed in the form of sucrose, it is digested (broken down) and then absorbed as free fructose. As sucrose comes into contact with the membrane of the small intestine, the enzyme sucrase catalyzes the cleavage of sucrose to yield one glucose unit and one fructose unit, which are then each absorbed. After absorption, it enters the hepatic portal vein and is directed toward the liver. The mechanism of fructose absorption in the small intestine is not completely understood. Some evidence suggests active transport, because fructose uptake has been shown to occur against a concentration gradient. Since the concentration of fructose is higher in the lumen, fructose is able to flow down a concentration gradient into the enterocytes, assisted by transport proteins. Fructose may be transported out of the enterocyte across the basolateral membrane by either GLUT2 or GLUT5, although the GLUT2 transporter has a greater capacity for transporting fructose, and, therefore, the majority of fructose is transported out of the enterocyte through GLUT2. Capacity and rate of absorption. It appears that the GLUT5 transfer rate may be saturated at low levels, and absorption is increased through joint absorption with glucose. In addition, fructose transfer activity increases with dietary fructose intake. The presence of fructose in the lumen causes increased m. RNA transcription of GLUT5, leading to increased transport proteins. High- fructose diets (> 2. When fructose is not absorbed in the small intestine, it is transported into the large intestine, where it is fermented by the colonic flora. Hydrogen is produced during the fermentation process and dissolves into the blood of the portal vein. This hydrogen is transported to the lungs, where it is exchanged across the lungs and is measurable by the hydrogen breath test. The colonic flora also produces carbon dioxide, short- chain fatty acids, organic acids, and trace gases in the presence of unabsorbed fructose. By contrast, glucose tends to pass through the liver (Km of hepatic glucokinase = 1. M) and can be metabolised anywhere in the body. Uptake of fructose by the liver is not regulated by insulin. However, insulin is capable of increasing the abundance and functional activity of GLUT5 in skeletal muscle cells. In fructolysis, the enzyme fructokinase initially produces fructose 1- phosphate, which is split by aldolase B to produce the triosesdihydroxyacetone phosphate (DHAP) and glyceraldehyde. Unlike glycolysis, in fructolysis the triose glyceraldehyde lacks a phosphate group. A third enzyme, triokinase, is therefore required to phosphorylate glyceraldehyde, producing glyceraldehyde 3- phosphate. The resulting trioses are identical to those obtained in glycolysis and can enter the gluconeogenic pathway for glucose or glycogen synthesis, or be further catabolized through the lower glycolytic pathway to pyruvate. Metabolism of fructose to DHAP and glyceraldehyde. Fructose 1- phosphate then undergoes hydrolysis by aldolase B to form DHAP and glyceraldehydes; DHAP can either be isomerized to glyceraldehyde 3- phosphate by triosephosphate isomerase or undergo reduction to glycerol 3- phosphate by glycerol 3- phosphate dehydrogenase. The glyceraldehyde produced may also be converted to glyceraldehyde 3- phosphate by glyceraldehyde kinase or further converted to glycerol 3- phosphate by glycerol 3- phosphate dehydrogenase. The metabolism of fructose at this point yields intermediates in the gluconeogenic pathway leading to glycogen synthesis as well as fatty acid and triglyceride synthesis. Metformin for the Treatment of PCOSPolycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common condition characterized by failure to ovulate (and irregular menstrual periods), a tendency toward excess body hair, acne and/or oily skin, and a tendency to be overweight. Lowering the insulin levels acts to decrease elevated levels of male- type hormones (such as testosterone) and, in many cases, restores ovulation and normal fertility. Treatment of infertility for women with PCOS is ovulation induction with clomiphene citrate (Clomid, Serophene) and/or Metformin. For those who fail to ovulate in response to clomiphene citrate alone, treatment with Metformin may be added. It should not be used in times of acute physical stress such as severe illness (influenza), surgery or recovery from significant trauma. Dehydration should be avoided while taking Metformin. Alcohol should be avoided while taking Metformin (we recommend no alcohol intake while attempting to conceive but limiting consumption to one drink or less per day is sensible). If surgery is anticipated, Metformin can be discontinued 2 days in advance. The most common side effects are nausea, vomiting or diarrhea. Starting the medication slowly and increasing the dose gradually will help avoid these symptoms. Also, these side effects improve and usually resolve after a few weeks of taking Metformin as your body adjusts to the new treatment. Metformin may cause a metallic taste in the mouth and decreased appetite. Many women lose weight while taking Metformin and this is encouraged as long as you are heavier than your “optimal” weight and you follow a sensible, nutritious diet. Related medications, such as Troglitazone, have caused liver injury and even liver failure in a small number of women. Troglitazone was taken off the market in 2. Lactic acidosis occurs most commonly in patients with impaired kidney or liver function, or who are dehydrated. If you have trouble tolerating an increased dose, drop back to the previous dose and try to increase again the following week. If it takes 4 or 5 weeks to get up to the correct dose that is okay. Why can’t I lose weight? I hear this question all the time. It’s usually followed by something like “my best friend SkinnyBitch used this internet diet and lost.
