An 1,8. 00- calorie diet is an appropriate weight- loss amount for those who are moderately active or who burn more than 2,0. Eighteen- hundred calories allows for enough food to prevent feelings of deprivation and to provide adequate nutrition. Weight loss comes about as a result of a calorie deficit, meaning you must expend more calories than you consume. One pound of weight is equivalent to 3,5. To lose 1 pound per week, this deficit must equal about 5. If you eat 1,8. 00 calories a day, you must burn at least 2,3. 28 1800 calorie diet plans you can use to lose weight and/or gain muscle depending on your weight and height. The strategy depends on your preference, but sticking to a consistent, regular meal pattern was associated with an overall lower calorie intake, higher post- meal metabolism and lower cholesterol levels in a study published in the “American Journal of Clinical Nutrition” in January 2. Women who ate three to nine times at irregular intervals did not experience these positive results. An 1,8. 00- calorie diet for weight loss should feature high- quality foods that come from whole sources, rather than processed or fast foods. Shrimp, tuna, skinless white- meat poultry, extra- lean beef and egg whites make good lean protein sources. Fresh or flash- frozen vegetables that have a high fiber and water content offer few calories and plenty of vitamins, nutrients and antioxidants. Whole grains also offer fiber, which can help a dieter feel full for longer than quick- digesting, nutrient- poor refined carbohydrates like white bread and sugary cereal. Low- fat dairy provides calcium and can assist with weight loss, as suggested by a study from Curtin University in Australia released in October 2. Fats are an important macronutrient and should make up about 2. Fat takes longer to digest, notes registered dietitian Joanne Larsen on Ask the Dietitian, helping you feel more satisfied and less hungry between meals. Fat also plays a role in many important bodily functions such as vitamin absorption and hormone production. Where did this dietary concept originate? Also, throughout history meat- based meals were a symbol of an affluent lifestyle while those of the lower classes consumed a . The unspoken cultural assumption that persists today is that a plant- based diet is inferior and deficient in protein and contributes to a weakened body. The good news is that the growing body of nutritional research is illuminating the fallacy of this cultural myth. Research has shown that all plants contain protein and at least 1. Broccoli contains more protein per calorie than steak and, per calorie, spinach is about equal to chicken and fish. Multiple studies have shown that if you are meeting your caloric needs through plant- based nutrition, you will satisfy your body. If you consume 2. Days, 9. 00 Very Ripe Bananas. You might remember a guest post about fruitarianism on No Meat Athlete last year that drew a lot of negative comments, mostly dismissing the diet as a fad. But Ben Benulis wanted to see if there was something more to it. Here he is with a post about his experiment. If you’ve never heard of “dinosaur weiners,” it’s your lucky day. As vegetarians and vegans, most of us are comfortable going against the grain. We buck the trend of the standard diet in favor of something we feel is better. But even the most open- minded of vegetarian and vegan individuals will eventually draw the line somewhere. Case in point: Fruitarianism. Controversial things like this pique my curiosity. When I read last year’s No Meat Athlete post on the fruitarian diet, I began to ask questions: How could anyone survive, even thrive, on just fruits and vegetables? Why were people so quick to jump to conclusions that this diet was unhealthy/nutrient- deficient/unsustainable/expensive/ridiculous? Why was there such a negative backlash on something that, to me, sounded kinda cool? If fruits and vegetables are the healthiest foods, is it really so crazy to eat them to the exclusion of everything else? If you look at the comments of the NMA post on fruitarianism, a lot of people seemed to magically become experts on why this was bad, without ever having read anything else on the topic or, better yet, trying it themselves. I had the opposite reaction — someone going so ridiculously against the grain intrigued me. With such negative backlash, I wondered what the big deal was. I had to investigate for myself. A rose by any other name. The Perfect Health Diet. Foreign translations of the original food plate. It turns out what many of us call “fruitarianism” is actually the 8. Dr. Graham is a lifelong athlete, a raw vegan since the 1. I was born. It’s the culmination of years of experience and research that produced a few other books as well, including Grain Damage and Nutrition and Athletic Performance. Before anyone undergoes such an endeavor (or dismisses it outright), I’d suggest picking up this text. If you’re looking for the Cliff’s Notes version, here are some of the highlights of the 8. Eat plant- based whole foods in their natural state. Nature provides food to us, as is, with everything we need.
If we cook something, we alter it and it is no longer a whole food. Protein from raw plants is best. Cooked protein from any source is denatured. Animal protein is especially toxic. When calories from fat exceed 1. Cooked fats in particular are carcinogenic. Oil is not a whole food and should be avoided. Carbohydrates are then left to be at least 8. It tastes great, comes in its own packaging, and doesn’t need to be cooked or altered in any way. Grains are indigestible in their raw state. Since one has to cook them, they are not a whole food. Grains have a poor micronutrient content (relative to fruits and vegetables) and various “anti- nutrients,” such as gluten. Putting theory into practice. I’d advise a gradual transition to the diet. I experimented with his recipes and slowly started incorporating more and more fresh fruits and vegetables in my diet until they were about 8. Once I felt comfortable with this, I decided to try a 3. Fundamentally, the 8. Diet involves getting your primary calorie source (9. Your main source of macronutrients (calories, carbs, protein & fat) is fruit and your main source of micronutrients (vitamins and minerals) is vegetables. However, since fruits are far more calorically dense than vegetables, you end up eating equal volumes of fruits and vegetables. Here is what a typical day looked like for me: Breakfast: 1- 2. L of water. On very active days, I ramped up my calorie count. In all, I was able to cover all my macro and micronutrient needs, aside from Vitamin D and Vitamin B1. I feel pretty darn good about that. The good, the bad, and the ugly. Who has 2. 7 ripe bananas in their house for one day of eating? It can be a bit challenging. To make it work, I discovered a few key strategies: Inventory management: I’d like to think my work background in supply chain management helped here. Not only did I need to have enough fruit, I needed to have enough RIPE fruit. Is it a good idea to "starve" yourself just a little bit each day, or a couple of days a week? Mounting evidence indicates that yes, intermittent. Smackfat Ketone Strips - Perfect for Ketogenic Diet and Diabetics - Precise Ketone Measurement and Supports Ketone Adaptation, 100 Strips. Summary of Important Health Benefits of Grassfed Meats, Eggs and Dairy. Lower in Fat and Calories. There are a number of nutritional differences. We try to always see things from the bright side even though we all have setbacks and things troubling us every now and then. That is why we have waited to tell you. When you buy fruit from the grocery store, it usually isn’t ripe yet — there is a window of ripeness between underripe and overripe that must be carefully managed. There’s a highly technical way to determine ripeness, and I’ll let you in on the complicated secret: A banana must be brown and speckled, like a “dinosaur weiner.” (If anyone asks you where you got such privileged information, don’t tell them I let you in on the secret!)I needed lots of speckled dinosaur wieners. I found out that if you buy an entire 4. Turns out this diet is pretty cheap after all!! Of course there were the awkward questions at the checkout line. I got tired of people not believing me when I said I was going to eat them all so I started telling people I had a pet monkey. Whenever a certain type of fruit was on sale, I bought as much as I could carry. On one weekend drive out to the country my wife and I passed a farm fruit stand got a 4. For 3 days, I ate pretty much only farm- fresh organic peaches and spinach. Despite what you may think, it was fantastic. A blender is essential: 3. There end up being endless permutations of possible smoothies. For the sake of easy digestion, smoothies of more than 3 ingredients are discouraged. If you’re on the 8. Social situations: The diet makes it challenging (not impossible) to meet friends for dinner. If people asked, I just told them I had eaten before I got there (which was often true). Your main option at any restaurant is a salad with no dressing. Taste buds: The longer you do this diet, the more your taste buds “wake up,” and you no longer need dressing on a salad because the vegetables taste so good on their own. My taste buds became “re- sensitized”. Fruits and vegetables just tasted better and had more flavor. Lettuce and spinach, just on their own, tasted delicious. Conversely, veggies like jalapenos, olives and banana peppers (which I always loved) had almost too much flavor and became hard to eat. Cravings for things outside the diet: This was tricky. There were times when cravings for a burrito or tofu stir- fry crept in. To manage this, I ate enough fruit during the day so that I would always be satisfied. I counted my calories to make sure I was getting enough to sustain me through the day. Once I mastered that, the cravings never really hit me anymore. The results. While undertaking this experiement, I noted a few changes in my body. I lost 5 pounds of body fat, going from 1. I was eating as much as I wanted (anywhere from 3,6. I also noticed insane athletic recovery. I’m no Ironman triathlete, but I do like to get out there and hit it hard when I can. I had one day where I did 2. The next morning I woke up fresh as a daisy not an ounce of soreness. I slept better. I was more productive at work. I just felt better. Lasting impact? I was a “fruitarian” for 3. On the 3. 2nd day, I broke down and had some Chinese stir- fry. I had an obligatory monster burrito and even an entire Whole Foods vegan pizza in one sitting. At the end of the week, I went out for a run and woke up the next day, sore for the first time in over a month. That was the signal to re- embrace the diet. This time, I’m going for 6. Obesity and top killers such as diabetes, heart disease, Alzheimer's and cancer have something significant in common — they're all rooted in insulin and leptin resistance. Sugars found in processed foods and grains are the primary culprits, and the standard American diet is chockfull of both. This is good news, as it significantly simplifies your approach to improving your health. You won't need a different set of strategies to address each condition. So how do you correct these metabolic imbalances? The timing of your meals can also play an important role. Nutritional Ketosis May Be Key for Optimal Health. By eating a healthy high- fat, low- carbohydrate and low- to moderate- protein diet, you enter into what is known as nutritional ketosis: a state in which your body burns fat as its primary fuel rather than glucose (sugar). Mounting research suggests nutritional ketosis is the answer to a long list of health problems, starting with obesity. In fact, endurance athletes are turning away from conventional high- carb strategies and adopting this way of eating because it boosts physical stamina and endurance. Cancer is another area where ketogenic diets show great promise. Other benefits include fewer hunger pangs and a dramatic drop in food cravings once you've made the shift from burning sugar to burning fat as your primary fuel. Being an efficient fat burner may also boost your longevity. Researchers have identified about a dozen genes associated with longevity. According to Jeff Volek, Ph. D., a registered dietitian and professor in the Human Science Department at Ohio State University, who has done enormous work in the field of high- fat, low- carbohydrate diets and has authored several books on this topic, the primary function of one of these genes is to cripple the degradation of branched- chain amino acids (BCAAs), such as leucine. Preventing this degradation can help preserve your muscle mass. BCAAs have other benefits as well: In a number of studies involving middle- aged animal models, adding BCAAs increased muscle and cardiac mitochondrial biogenesis (the creation of new mitochondria), improving both health span and longevity. Interestingly, BCAAs are very similar in structure to ketones — energy molecules created by your liver from fats — and ketones seem to be preferentially metabolized. In other words, ketones spare those branched- chain amino acids, leaving higher levels of them in circulation while also helping you retain muscle mass and promoting longevity. Ketones — A Healthy, Clean- Burning Fuel. The primary reason that so many people are overweight and/or in poor health these days is that the Westernized diet is overloaded with non- fiber carbs as the primary fuel, which in turn inhibit your body's ability to access and burn body fat. High- quality fats, meanwhile, are a far preferable fuel, as they are utilized far more efficiently than carbs. When you burn fat as your primary fuel, your respiratory quotient (the amount of oxygen you need) typically goes down,2 which is a sign that your metabolism is running more efficiently. How to Enter Into Nutritional Ketosis. The most efficient way to train your body to use fat for fuel is to remove most of the sugars and starches from your diet, and that's true for everyone, whether you're an elite athlete or a sedentary diabetic. At the same time, you'll want to replace those carbs with healthy fats. This is only a generalization, as each person responds to foods in a different way. Some people can enter into full ketosis while eating as much as 7. Others, especially if you're insulin resistant or have type 2 diabetes, may require less than 4. This will give you an objective measure of whether or not you're truly in ketosis, rather than just relying on counting the grams of carbohydrates you consume. Nutritional ketosis is defined as blood ketones that stay in the range of 0. L). My first choice is Cronometer. That's my upgrade to the basic Cronometer nutrient tracker, and the default is set to macronutrient levels that will support nutritional ketosis. Avoid Milk and Consider MCT Oil. Aside from added sugars and grains, it is best to avoid milk for the time being, as it can be difficult to stay in ketosis if you eat or drink a lot of it. The galactose in milk is a carbohydrate and you can easily exceed your net carb allotment by drinking a single glass of milk. Casein, the primary protein in milk, can also trigger or contribute to inflammation. When you keep net carbs low, your body switches to burning fat for fuel and your liver begins to convert some of that fat into ketone bodies. This is endogenous production, meaning that they are made by your body from your fat stores or from the fats in the foods that you eat. You can boost your level of ketones by taking them in supplement form, but these exogenous ketones (made in a lab, not in your body) are not likely to be as beneficial unless you are already . Based on my understanding of mitochondrial health and metabolic function, a vast majority of health conditions could fall into this category. One of the conditions for which a ketogenic diet has the longest and best documented track record is epilepsy. This diet has been effectively used to treat drug resistant epileptic seizures since the 1. In my view, it would be wise to implement a ketogenic diet as a first- line therapy, but in conventional medicine, it's typically not considered or recommended unless the patient fails to respond to medication. Even then, this conversation may have to be initiated by the patient, or the parent of a child with seizures. As noted in the featured article: 5. This is also known as a 4: 1 ketogenic diet because it provides four times as much fat as protein and carbs combined. The modified Atkins diet (MAD) is based on a considerably less restrictive 1: 1 ratio of fat to protein and carbs. It has been shown to be equally effective for seizure control in most adults and children older than two years of age. While fats are unable to cross the blood brain barrier, ketones, being water- soluble fats, can cross it and feed your brain. They also appear to lower markers of systemic inflammation, such as IL- 6 and others. Many times, improved cognition and mental acuity are among the first things people notice when entering nutritional ketosis. Ketones are the preferred source of energy for your brain in general, but especially for those affected by diabetes, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and maybe even ALS, because in these diseases certain neurons have become insulin resistant or have lost the ability to efficiently utilize glucose, which causes the neurons to die off. When ketones are present, these neurons have a better chance of surviving and thriving. As noted in the featured article, . They also do not need insulin to help them cross cell membranes, including neuronal membranes. Instead, they use simple diffusion, so they can even enter cells that have become insulin resistant. This is likely one of the reasons nutritional ketosis works so well for a variety of neurological problems and diseases. It even shows promise for. Migraine headaches: Following a ketogenic diet for four weeks has been shown to reduce migraine frequency and lower the use of pain medication. Traumatic brain injuries: Animal studies suggest it can help reduce brain swelling, improve motor function and speed up recovery, although it appears more effective in the young than the old. Human studies still need to validate these findings. Metabolic Conditions Improve on Ketogenic Diet Nutritional ketosis is also indicated for obesity, metabolic syndrome (prediabetes) and diabetes. This is not surprising, considering the fact that one of its beneficial effects is correcting insulin resistance. If you meet at least three of the following criteria, you may be diagnosed with metabolic syndrome: abdominal obesity, elevated triglycerides, low HDL cholesterol, high blood pressure and/or elevated fasting blood sugar. Nutritional ketosis has been shown to improve most of these. Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), which is strongly associated with obesity, type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome, has also been shown to improve on a low- carb diet high in healthy fats. In one study,1. 3 obese men diagnosed with metabolic syndrome and NAFLD showed significant improvement in their weight, blood pressure, liver enzymes and liver fat after four months on a ketogenic diet; 2. NAFLD. Glycogen storage disease (GSD) and glucose transporter 1 (GLUT1) deficiency syndrome are two other conditions for which a ketogenic diet is a literal life saver. GSD is characterized by a lack of an enzyme that helps store glucose as glycogen or break glycogen down into glucose. The exact form of the disease depends on which enzyme in question that's lacking. As noted by Authority Nutrition. However, early research suggests that a ketogenic diet may benefit people with some forms of GSD, . Seizures and impaired motor skills are two common symptoms that typically manifest shortly after birth. The benefit of a ketogenic diet is quite apparent in this case, as ketones do not need this protein in order to enter your brain. Hence ketones are an ideal fuel for GLUT1 deficient people, allowing their brains to function more normally. Hormonal and Nervous System Disorders May Improve on Ketogenic Diet. Your hormone regulation and nervous system may also benefit from being an effective fat burner. Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and multiple sclerosis (MS) are two conditions that appear to respond well to this switch in primary fuel. Home - The Paleo Diet. Still not impressed with Paleo?. For example, if you consume 5. Likewise, if you eat 5. Examples of calorie content of some popular foods and beverages include the following: One slice of original- style crust pepperoni pizza - 2. Though some people have an easier time slimming down than others, weight loss is basically about how many calories you eat versus how many you burn. Here's the simple math. One pound equals 3,5. To lose a pound a week, create a daily deficit of 5. The biggest challenge for a cyclist is to create this deficit while still getting enough fuel to sustain your rides. It's also where most of us get it wrong. Some riders try to lose weight by underfueling their rides. If you start depleting muscle, your performance suffers. It does no good to be skinny if you're off the back. And chances are you won't get skinny because you'll finish the ride starving and eat everything in sight. It's more effective to eat measured portions of the right kinds of calories throughout the day. Don't devalue carbs: Though protein is vital for muscle repair, carbs are a cyclist's primary source of fuel during training, Guzman says. Based on these principles, Guzman created an eating program based on whole foods with high nutritional value that will optimize your health and weight. Each meal provides a balance of slow- burning carbs to fuel your riding, along with muscle- mending protein, healthy fat for energy and immunity, and an array of fruits and vegetables. We call it the GO FASTER plan because every ingredient was selected for its ability to transform you into a leaner, more powerful cyclist. For rides under 9. Guzman recommends electrolyte drinks; for longer rides, look for sports drinks that are 4 to 7 percent carbohydrate. Otherwise, reach for flavored waters, coffee, tea, and other low- sugar, low- calorie drinks. Avoid soda, fruit juices, and diet soft drinks (artificial sweeteners have been linked to fat gain). Alcohol delivers empty calories, and while a glass of wine with dinner isn't a crime, if you want to get lean, consider how those calories fit into your daily total. As for sweets, it's okay to to splurge on dessert now and then. Stay Lean for Life. Anyone who has ever been on a diet knows that dropping pounds turns out to be the easy part. In fact, a recent study puts the odds at one in six for maintaining weight loss. That's pretty discouraging news. The better news is that as an active cyclist, you're already one step ahead of the game. That works out to about an hour of moderate riding every day. As activity levels slide, weight creeps back on. You may also need to start eating a little less. Losing weight resets your metabolism. And the more you ride, the more efficient you become at burning calories. In short, the new, leaner you needs fewer calories to sustain your body both on and off your bike. The adjustments aren't huge. For each pound you lose, your total daily calorie requirements dip by about 1. So a rider who dropped 1. Keep following the plan until you hit your goal weight. Then stay with it for three months, allowing your metabolism to adjust. Having a focused plan can also help. Here are four other strategies that researchers have linked to keeping weight off. Eat breakfast It keeps your energy level steady so you don't overeat later in the day. Weigh in The vast majority of people who stay slim step on a scale at least once a week—those concrete numbers staring up at you are simply too hard to ignore. Be Consistent Most folks who keep the pounds off do so by staying the course. They eat well most of the time without swinging between deprivation and bingeing. Reward Yourself Giving yourself strategic incentives (a new jersey or gloves, for example, rather than, say, cake) for healthy behavior prevents backsliding. Does Body Shape Matter? Most of us can slot our overall build into one of three general categories. Which type are you? Ectomorph You tend to be long- limbed and small- framed. Your muscles are lean and sinewy, not bulky, and you may have trouble keeping weight on. To gain strength and lean muscle mass, work your large muscle groups with squats and leg presses, and by performing big- gear intervals on the bike, and be sure to get enough protein by including it in every meal. Mesomorph You’re naturally muscular and proportionally built, and tend toward the lean side. While you shouldn’t seek to deliberately lose muscle, you may want to avoid gaining it where you don’t need it for cycling, like on your upper body. Endomorph You are generally more heavyset, especially around your midsection, and have a hard time losing fat. Even though muscle is an athlete’s engine, too much can weigh you down. Try plyometrics (jumping exercises) to improve the speed and force of your muscle contractions without increasing bulk. Where Does Power- to- Weight Fit In? The single best measure of your cycling performance is your power- to- weight ratio. This figure refers to the maximum power output measured in watts that you can sustain for an extended period of time, generally 3. You’ll need a power meter to find this number. The standard test for determining power is to perform a 2. No hill at your disposal? Simulate the test on a flat road or trainer. Avoid rolling roads, which will lower your overall power number. Record the average wattage you produce, then divide the watts by your morning body weight in kilograms (pounds divided by 2. Beginner cyclists usually pull in the range of 2. Fast recreational riders produce wattage in the range of 3. If you’re cranking out 2. If it’s not optimal, use our weight- loss training and nutrition plans. If it’s where you want it to be, work on your power. Regular strength training, especially squats, leg presses, and step- ups, can do the job. Turn that strength into power on the bike by performing intervals like the ones in Your Quickstart Plan. An error occurred while setting your user cookie. The quality and composition of a protein (are all of the puzzle pieces present?) is also referred to as its biological value. Humans and dogs can take the pieces of the puzzle in the plant protein and, from those, make the missing pieces. This is why humans and dogs can live on a vegetarian diet but cats cannot. Noah Burstein recruited Lucas as a volunteer for experimental cell regeneration using similar principles as observed in the Super- Soldier process he had previously used to imbue Warhawk. Burstein immersed Lucas in an electrical field conducted by an organic chemical compound; when he left Lucas unattended, Rackham, in an attempt to kill Lucas, caused the machine to overload inducing body- wide enhancement that gave him unbreakable skin, astronomical strength as well as stamina. He was the son of Esther and James Lucas, a retired N. Y. P. D. Lucas spent his youth causing trouble on the streets with his friends Willis Stryker and Reva Connors. He eventually joined a gang called The Rivals along with his best friend Stryker, he fought the rival gang the Diablos and committed various petty thefts, often on behalf of deformed crimelord Sonny Caputo a. Lucas was in and out of juvenile homes throughout his teens, he dreamed of becoming a major New York racketeer until he finally realized how his actions were hurting his family; he sought to better himself as an adult, finding legitimate employment. After that Reva ended the relationship and turned to Lucas for comfort. This created a rift between the two former friends and Stryker believed Lucas was the cause of the break- up. Stryker planted heroin stolen from Cottonmouth's organization in Lucas' place and tipped off the cops. He spent his time getting into brawls along with various escape attempts. Because of this he was transferred to Seagate Prison one of the toughest facilities off the coast of Georgia. On his various first day he became target of racist and sadistic prison guard; Albert . His brutality toward Lucas was the reason he was later demoted which made him hate the inmate even more. Noah Burstein came to the prison to carry out secret medical research and recruited Lucas as a volunteer. He was secretly working on experimental cell regeneration based on a variant of the Super- Soldier process he had previously used to empower Warhawk. However when he left equipment unattended, Rackham tampered with the controls, hoping to kill Lucas. However the treatment was accelerated past its attended purpose causing mutagenic change throughout his body fortifying his cells giving him superhuman strength and durability. Lucas with his new found powers used them to escape the prison and his way back to Harlem. A chance encounter with criminals inspired him to use his new powers for profit. He would help anyone who could meet his price. He found an office office in Times Square's Gem Theater, which was owned by film student D. W. Burstein also relocated to New York and opened the Storefront Clinic, assisted by Dr. He first met Claire after he was attacked by hitmen hired by his old friend Stryker. When she rushed to help him she was shocked to find that he wasn't injured by the attack, but insisted on having her colleague look at his bruises but at the clinic he met old friend Dr. He however was attacked by the syndicate looking to convince them into paying a protection fee. Claire suggested that they take up Luke's services. However Claire was kidnapped and Luke tracked her to the perpetrators lair, where he was surprised to find that it is his old friend and betrayer Stryker. The two former friends fought Cage who hoped to clear his name, however, during the fight Stryker fell through a skylight and is blown up by one of his own trick switchblades, ruining any hope Luke had that Stryker could clear his name. Gideon Mace, an embittered veteran who planned revenge on the US government. Mace enlisted disgruntled veterans, to paralyze Manhattan for a day to distract the cops. However this was a decoy as he planned to attack and rob Wall Street. Ridgely was murdered by Mace's men so he hunted down Mace and attacked his hideout, but when Mace tried to flee in a helicopter, Luke caused it to crash into the Hudson River. Luke was next hired by Jasper Brunt, to investigate the . In investigating, Luke learned that the Phantom was really Armand Lorning, the son of Brunt's former business partner. The two men fought but they fell out the window to their deaths. Luke arrived to find two thugs beating on Jenks. Luke managed to fight off the attackers but not before Jenks was stabbed. Luke went to the lobby to call Jenks' wife to inform her of his death. Luke then placed a call to the police. Returning to the balcony, Luke was shocked to learn that Jenks' body had already been taken away by an ambulance. Luke made a vow to Jenks' wife to find his body. He noticed an ambulance pull out of the warehouse but once the driver spotted Luke he turned around and quickly drove back inside. Suspicious, Luke went in after him, fully expecting an ambush. His suspicions were confirmed when he was attacked by Mariah's men. Luke pretended to get knocked out and was dragged before Black Mariah herself. Luke sprung back into action and beat up his captors. Mariah attempted to shoot him but the bullets bounced off Luke's unbreakable skin. Mariah tried a different tactic and lunged at Luke, using her weight and enormous size to her advantage. Reluctant to hit a woman, Luke braced himself against a wall and let Mariah run into it. Thinking herself bested, Mariah tried to flee on a speedboat. Luke jumped from a gantry and landed on the boat, capsizing it and leaving Mariah floating in the water. She was later arrested. Luke took the job and destroyed the Doombots with ease. However Doom skipped town without paying his $2. Luke borrowed the Fantastic Four's jet, flew to Latveria, and beat the living hell out of Doom until he paid him his fee. After he was paid he left Doom in peace and returned to the States. Inside were two live, venomous snakes. Luke easily defeated them, tied them both together, and tossed them aside. Two large men walked in and introduced themselves as Mike and Ike. The duo noticed that Luke had received their boss's gift and wondered if Luke would appreciate his offer as well. Luke grew annoyed and grabbed Mike, demanding who they were working for. After a brief fight, Luke threatened to shove the two snakes down Mike's throat if he didn't give up his boss's name. Getting the answers he needed, Luke traveled to the Midtown office of drug kingpin Cornell Cottonmouth. Luke, suspicious that the heroin used to frame him and send him to prion came from Cottonmouth's organization, accepted the job, reasoning that he would have a better chance at clearing his name if he was on the inside. Over the following days, Cottonmouth's diminutive assistant Mr. Slick showed Luke the ins and outs of the operation. During this time, Luke hoped to find records of Cottonmouth's dealings that could clear his name but to no avail. Growing increasingly frustrated by his lack of progress, Luke resolved to call the cops, figuring that maybe they could find the records or at the very least shut the operation down. Cottonmouth learned of Luke's betrayal and attacked him. Slick was accidentally knocked out the window and plummeted thirty five stories to his death. Distraught, Cottonmouth surrendered. Luke demanded Cottonmouth show him his records, a request Cottonmouth laughed at. Cottonmouth told Luke that Mr. Slick, who had a photographic memory, was his records. Luke knocked Cottonmouth out and called the police to have him arrested. Jewel, a young woman whose super- strength and unconventional style matched his own. He and a number of other superheroes including: Spider- Man, Daredevil, Wolverine, Captain America and the Black Widow were asked to travel to Latveria to help Fury overthrow the government of Lucia von Bardas, whom be discovered to be financing a number of technologically- based super- criminals in the United States. Knowing that the superheroes could never condone such an action, he had the previous two days activities erased from their minds. She then blasted Cage with a concentrated energy beam which leveled his entire apartment as an act of revenge. Both Cage and Jones survived the blast, though Cage sustained a great deal of damage to his internal organs and lay in a coma. This was further compounded by the fact that Cage's unbreakable skin made it impossible for doctors to operate on him. Captain America also arrived and got into an argument with Fury, having regained his memories about their actions in Latveria some months previously. The two men and Danny Rand then took the unconscious Cage and removed him from the hospital to ensure his safety from further acts of retribution. They finally found him at the Night Nurse'smedical clinic, a place where superheroes can secretly go to receive medical attention. Rand brought Cage here after Fury told him to bring his friend someplace safe. Nick Fury then appeared to both a now- conscious Cage and Jessica and apologized for messing up their lives. He vowed that he would no longer interfere with them, or anyone else, and told them that they were good people. At the start of the Civil War Luke sent both Jessica and his daughter to Canada to avoid registration, though he himself refused to leave. Luke Cage and Spider- Man rounded up some of the remaining unregistered superhumans; Iron Fist (Daniel Rand), Spider- Woman (who was really the Skrull queen Veranke), Wolverine, and Doctor Strange to form a new team of New Avengers. Taking refugee in Doctor Strange's Sanctum Sanctorum, Cage tasked the New Avengers with opposing the numerous escapees from the Raft prison while uncovering and exposing the truth behind the Raft breakout, the corruption in S. Sus, within the Suidaefamily of even- toed ungulates. Pigs include the domestic pig and its ancestor, the common Eurasian wild boar (Sus scrofa), along with other species; related creatures outside the genus include the peccary, the babirusa, and the warthog. Pigs, like all suids, are native to the Eurasian and African continents. Juvenile pigs are known as piglets. Because of the similarities between pigs and humans, pigs are used for human medical research. Apparently related to Low Germanbigge, Dutchbig (. Another Old English word for . Synonyms grunter, porker are from sailors' and fishermen's euphemistic avoidance of uttering the word pig at sea, a superstition perhaps based on the fate of the Gadarene swine, who drowned. There are four hoofed toes on each trotter (foot), with the two larger central toes bearing most of the weight, but the outer two also being used in soft ground. The rear teeth are adapted for crushing. In the male, the canine teeth form tusks, which grow continuously and are sharpened by constantly being ground against each other. Others may cause the death of the piglets and sometimes, the mother may eat the piglets. It is estimated that 5. In a study by the University of Lincoln, 3. They were placed in a room with two food bowls at each end of the room. One food bowl contained sugar- coated chocolate sweets and the other contained coffee beans. Optimistic pigs were likely to check if there was a third bowl filled with sweets. However pessimistic pigs would not even bother checking if the bowl was filled with sweets or not. The study shows that non- human animals can share similar traits with humans. Its many subspecies are native to all but the harshest climates of continental Eurasia and its islands and Africa as well, from Ireland and India to Japan and north to Siberia. Long isolated from other pigs on the many islands of Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines, pigs have evolved into many different species, including wild boar, bearded pigs, and warty pigs. Humans have introduced pigs into Australia, North and South America, and numerous islands, either accidentally as escaped domestic pigs which have gone feral, or as wild boar. The wild pig (Sus scrofa) can take advantage of any forage resources. Therefore, it can live in virtually any productive habitat that can provide enough water to sustain large mammals such as pigs. If there is increased foraging of wild pigs in certain areas, it can cause a nutritional shortage which can cause the pig population to decrease. If the nutritional state returns to normal, the pig population will most likely rise due to the pigs' naturally increased reproduction rate. In the wild, they are foraging animals, primarily eating leaves, grasses, roots, fruits, and flowers. In confinement, pigs are fed mostly corn and soybean meal. Traditionally they were raised on dairy farms and called . Their bristly hairs are also used for brushes. Due to their common use as livestock, adult swine have gender specific names: the males are boars and the females are sows. In Britain, the word hog can refer to a castrated adult male pig. Pork is one of the most popular forms of meat for human consumption, accounting for 3. Because of their foraging abilities and excellent sense of smell, they are used to find truffles in many European countries. Both wild and feral pigs are commonly hunted. Some breeds of pig, such as the Asian pot- bellied pig, are kept as pets. There are two instances in the 2. The first was in 2. Archaeological evidence suggests that pigs were being managed in the wild in a way similar to the way they are managed by some modern New Guineans from wild boar as early as 1. This was also done in China. The guinea pig (Cavia porcellus), cavy or domestic guinea pig, or cuy for livestock breeds, is a species of rodent belonging to the family Caviidae and the genus Cavia. Domesticated pigs, called swine, are raised commercially for meat (generally called pork, hams, gammon or bacon), as well as for leather. Their bristly hairs are also. FAVORITE VEGETABLES AND FRUITS. Though ecologically logical as well as economical, pig toilets are waning in popularity as use of septic tanks and/or sewerage systems is increasing in rural areas. Pigs were brought to southeastern North America from Europe by Hernando de Soto and other early Spanish explorers. Pigs are particularly valued in China and on certain oceanic islands, where their self- sufficiency allows them to be turned loose, although the practice is not without its drawbacks (see environmental impact). The domestic pig (Sus scrofa domesticus) is usually given the scientific name. Sus scrofa, although some authors call it S. Pot Bellied Pig Health, Behavior, Diet and Information Section. This section will always be a constantly growing work. The information presented here is.It was domesticated approximately 5,0. Their coats are coarse and bristly. They are born brownish coloured and tend to turn more grayish coloured with age. The upper canines form sharp distinctive tusks that curve outward and upward. Compared to other artiodactyles, their head is relatively long, pointed, and free of warts. Their head and body length ranges from 0. In August 2. 01. 5, a study looked at over 1. The process of domestication was assumed to have been initiated by humans, involved few individuals and relied on reproductive isolation between wild and domestic forms. The study found that the assumption of reproductive isolation with population bottlenecks was not supported. The study indicated that pigs were domesticated separately in Western Asia and China, with Western Asian pigs introduced into Europe where they crossed with wild boar. A model that fitted the data included admixture with a now extinct ghost population of wild pigs during the Pleistocene. The study also found that despite back- crossing with wild pigs, the genomes of domestic pigs have strong signatures of selection at DNA loci that affect behavior and morphology. The study concluded that human selection for domestic traits likely counteracted the homogenizing effect of gene flow from wild boars and created domestication islands in the genome. The same process may also apply to other domesticated animals. In Asia the wild boar is one of 1. Chinese zodiac, while in Europe the boar represents a standard charge in heraldry. In Islam and Judaism pigs and those who handle them are viewed negatively, and the consumption of pork is forbidden. Pigs are frequently alluded to in folk art, idioms, metaphors, and proverbs, and also occasionally in parables (e. Parable of the Prodigal Son). Accidental or deliberate releases of pigs into countries or environments where they are an alien species have caused extensive environmental change. Their omnivorous diet, aggressive behaviour, and their feeding method of rooting in the ground all combine to severely alter ecosystems unused to pigs. Pigs will even eat small animals and destroy nests of ground nesting birds. They have been introduced into many parts of the world, and will damage crops and home gardens as well as potentially spreading disease. They uproot large areas of land, eliminating native vegetation and spreading weeds. This results in habitat alteration, a change in plant succession and composition and a decrease in native fauna dependent on the original habitat. Health issues. Pigs can harbour a range of parasites and diseases that can be transmitted to humans. These include trichinosis, Taenia solium, cysticercosis, and brucellosis. Pigs are also known to host large concentrations of parasitic ascarid worms in their digestive tract. Pigs have small lungs in relation to their body size and are thus more susceptible than other domesticated animals to fatal bronchitis and pneumonia. Pigs also can acquire human influenza. Pigs can be aggressive in defending themselves and their young. Pig- induced injuries are thus not unusual in areas where pigs are raised or where they form part of the wild or feral fauna. The similarities between the pig and human genomes mean that the new data may have wide applications in the study and treatment of human genetic diseases. Retrieved 1. 5 September 2. To use information from a mirror and find a food bowl, each pig must have observed features of its surroundings, remembered these and its own actions, deduced relationships among observed and remembered features and acted accordingly. It's different for everyone and depends on what is in season, whether you are interested in foraging for greens, and what you think is good for your guinea pig, not to mention what your pig is willing to eat. Every pig is different: some have medical conditions requiring special diets. A few pigs don't like cabbage or cilantro. Others hate tomatoes (a staple in my home). Who knows what will turn your pig's head? Whatever you offer your guinea pigs, introduce foods slowly, offer a variety, and be sure to provide unlimited high quality hay (always!) and plain pellets (if your guinea pig is not prone to bladder stones). Romaine lettuce, one or two large leaves, sometimes more Tomato, wedge of large tomato or small Roma tomato. Carrot (baby), one small Guinea pigs eating a lot of romaine seem to excrete more powdery calcium deposits in their urine. Red and green leaf lettuce may be a better choice for your guinea pig, especially if they are prone to stones. Occasional vegetables : Broccoli leaves (tiny) and peeled broccoli stem. Chinese Cabbage (pak- choi), one leaf. Corn silks and husks when in season. Parsley*, one or more sprigs (*high in calcium)Forages like chickweed, dandelions*, and young clover* (*high in calcium)Fruit (give sparingly, refer to the nutrition chart for sugar content). Berries are generally lower in sugar than many fruits: Blackberries. Blueberries. Cranberries. Raspberries. Strawberries. You may not be able to add forages to your pigs diet, but they are a welcome addition for those of us who can. Grass is a major part of my pigs' diet, especially in spring and fall when it is most plentiful and tasty. I try to provide some grass every day but take a break when there is snow cover. Chickweed, young clover, young plantain and especially dandelion (another favorite) are other popular forages, especially welcome when young and tender. If you wish to lower calcium in your guinea pig's diet, chickweed is the best choice (other plants listed are higher in calcium). See Forages for more information on how to find nutritious weeds and grasses. Remember: Don't feed anything you wouldn't eat yourself (i. Availability: Arnica gels and tinctures are readily available from herb retailers. Seeds are available from specialty seed catalogs. Propagation & Harvest: Arnica requires soil with plenty of organic matter, and does best when its root system can crawl around under a blanket of pine needles. John’s wort, ginger, cayenne, and yarrow are good choices as internal adjunct therapies here. John’s wort can be used topically as well, and is especially useful if nerve trauma is suspected. Cautions & Comments: Arnica can be very toxic if ingested in anything but homeopathic or minute quantities, and may cause internal bleeding if ingested in large enough quanitites. Some varieties of astragalus are toxic, and to compound this mystery even more, these plants will often cross- pollinate and hybridize. Aug., 1. 98. 4. 4. Leaf margins are sometimes, but not always, toothed . Like most members of the Mint family, the stems of bee balm are distinctively square (four- sided). Flowers are presented in one to three inch terminal clusters, each containing dozens of tiny, rose to purple- colored blossoms. Perhaps the most distinguishing characteristic of this plant is its strong but pleasant odor, which ranges from sweetly sage- like to that which leads many to believe that they have discovered a wild strain of oregano. Livestock enjoy grazing on this plant and have undoubtedly served as a vehicle in the expansion of bee balm’s range. Cycle & Bloom Season: A perennial which blooms by mid- summer, and often continues to bloom until the first frost. Parts Used: Leaves if plucked from the plant; the entire aerial plant if the stem is taken. Actions: Diaphoretic, carminative, antiseptic, analgesic, antifungal, and anesthetic. Affinities: Skin, mouth, digestive tract, kidneys, urinary. Preparation: Unlike most leafy herbs which begin to break down and lose their potency after about six months, bee balm can be dried and stored for up to two years. No stratification or other special treatment is required, and it is adaptable to almost any soil. Pluck individual leaves to minimize impact, or gather the stem and leaves after the plant has bloomed and gone to seed. If the latter is your choice, clip the stems about one inch above ground level to allow for perennial re- growth and root protection. When gathering while the plant is in bloom, always be sure to leave plenty of flowers intact for pollination and seed development. Alternatives and Adjuncts: Combines well with catnip, chamomile, and/or fennel for digestive upsets and gas. Eaton SA; Allen D; Eades SC; Schneider D. A. Dried leaves lose their medicinal qualities rather quickly, so use this herb as early after drying as possible. The fresh leaves can be scraped of their prickly hairs and made into a poultice, or briefly steamed in their entire form for use as a warm, cover dressing for over- exerted muscles and minor skin inflammations. The problem is that GLA is relatively rare in nature— it occurs in only a few vegetable sources. It may be particularly useful in cases where water retention and high blood pressure are prevalent in an animal’s holistic condition. In these situations, the stronger licorice may be contraindicated because of its potential side- effects (see licorice). It is believed to work in the cardiovascular system in a way that is similar to the drug digitalis; by strengthening the heartbeat while slowing a rapid pulse. Appearance: Like many common names, the words “capsicum” or “cayenne” are used as generic terms for a broad range of small, very hot chili peppers. It’s effect in this capacity can be quite dramatic— especially when it is combined with herbs that have an affinity to the skin or extremities. Fortunately, it can be found at many nurseries. Cycle & Bloom Season: A perennial that blooms from late spring to mid- summer. Parts Used: Leaves, stems, and flowers are collected before seeds begin to develop. Actions: Carminative, sedative, antispasmodic, anti- emetic, feline- euphoric, diuretic. Affinities: Digestive and nervous systems. Preparation: Fresh or dried chopped herb, water infusion, tincture, or of course— in a catnip mouse. Specific Uses: Catnip is a gentle carminative and antispasmodic for easing flatulence and stomach upsets. Due to a constituent called nepeta lactone, cats become intoxicated when they sniff this plant. However, the effect of the herb when ingested is relaxing in a different way— calming to the stomach and relaxing to the nerves, but without feline- erotic visions of candy- coated mice. Unfortunately, the authors’ cat is one of those who, “just says no.” This is an excellent herb to consider for high- strung animals with a nervous stomach, especially if episodes of vomiting are predictable by stressful events— like running the vacuum cleaner, having the neighbors and their screaming child over for dinner, or worse yet— bringing another kitten into the royal palace. The herb can then be dried indoors. Pineapple weed looks, smells, and even tastes very much like its cultivated cousins, but its discoid flowers are completely without rays. Louis: Mosby, Inc., 1. Arizona: Oryx Press, 1. Flowers are minute and yellow; later developing into oddly fuzzy, seed- bearing capsules. Generally this occurs any time from March through May. Parts Used: Leaves, flowers, fruits. Actions: Bacteriostatic, antifungal, amoebicidal, antioxidant, alterative. Affinities: Skin, blood, liver. Preparation: Decoction— for external use as a skin and coat rinse; or as an ingredient in salves and ointments. For horses or other large animals, this is less of an issue, especially if the decoction is applied to portions of the body that are beyond reach of the animal’s mouth.
